A WOMAN who took part in a Boxing Day swim in the sea raised more than £1,000.

Shirley Craig took part in the event at Seaton Carew to raise money for the Hartlepool and District Hospice.

She raised the money through sponsorship and asked her family, friends and colleagues at Easington District Council to support her.

She said: "I lost my friend, Debbie Gray, to cancer. As she was only 39-years-old, it came as a massive shock to us all and I was devastated by her death.

"Debbie was cared for at the hospice and was looked after extremely well by their doctors and nurses. I wanted to thank the hospice for their help and decided to take part in the Boxing Day Dip to raise money.

"I must also thank everyone at the Easington council for their generosity and everyone who sponsored me to do the event.
