TRIBUTES have been paid to a respected former councillor who died this week after serving his community for more than 60 years.
Colonel Peter Consett, of Brawith Hall, near Thirsk, had represented his area on both Thirsk Rural District Council, and Hambleton District Council for 62 years when he retired in 1999.
During that time he served as chairman of the Hambleton authority for two years and was made an honorary alderman on his retirement.
Hambleton District Council leader, June Imeson, who served with him from 1974 until his retirement, said: "Colonel Consett was a true gentleman.
"He was a man of great charm and character and determination - he was never afraid to say what he thought.
"He has been greatly missed since his retirement two years ago. He was highly thought of by every member of the council, whatever their political party. Our thoughts go to his family."
Colonel Consett was also a North Yorkshire county councillor for 30 years, and a parish councillor
