MORE than 100 workers are to go at Black and Decker in Spennymoor after answering a call for volunteers for redundancy back in November.
A spokesman said: "No number was put on the number of volunteers required as it was designed as a natural efficiency move with the change of emphasis at the plant to professional and outdoor tools.
"Just over 100 volunteers came forward, many with long service and all have been carefully reviewed and accepted."
About 130 agency staff will also be laid off for three weeks as the company tries to reduce its output. Black and Decker currently employs 570 agency staff at its Spennymoor plant, which has a total workforce of 2,200.
A ballot has been postponed at Thorn Lighting in Spennymoor after the management entered into negotiations over new contracts which demand staff to work for anything between 24 and 42 hours a week.
