Tees Valley young athletes were in brilliant form at the North of England Sportshall finals at Thornaby Pavilion with both boys and girls U-15 teams winning their events to qualify for the national final in Birmingham next month.
Dale Jordan (speed bounce) and Jamie McCarthy (4-lap) were individual winners with John Baines claiming two second places and he also anchored the winning relay squad to ensure that Tees Valley finished ahead of Tyne and Wear.
Joanna Ibhadon won the vertical jump and was in the relay squad while Anna Kirby picked up three individual medals in the standing long jump, speed bounce and four-lap race.
Tees Valley also won the 4 x 2-lap relay and 8-lap paar lauf to finish ahead of the West Yorkshire team.
In the U-15 all-rounder event John Baines took second place with Anna Kirby finishing third.
Among the best performances in the U-13 age group were Gary McSweeney's win in the 6-lap race and Craig Aitken in the 4-lap race with Tees Valley winning the 8-lap paur lauf. Lauren Sidgwick finished second in the 2-lap race and the 4 x 2 relay and 8-lap paurlauf squads both third. Both teams finished in third place.

Shildon Running and AC
Seven members used the East Hull Harriers 20-Mile Road Race on Sunday as preparation for the London Marathon next month. First back for the club was veteran Bob Davison who finished 47th place in a time of 2:16.12. Next was Leigh Towers who was in the leading ten from the start until the 14-mile mark when he went through a bad patch and eventually finished in 79th position with a time of 2:22.09 and next was John Peirre Hupin in 94th position in 2:25.31.
Scot Ellwood tackling the distance for the first time was 142nd in 2:34.17.
Also running his first 20-miler was Ray Halton who finished in 257th in 2:2.57 and clubmate Les Lump also had the same time in 276th.
Finally, the club's only woman runner, Myra Menimen, also running her first 20-miler, had an excellent run to finish in 270th position in 3:1.20.
The race winner was Darren Bilton of City of Hull AC. in 1:50.40.
l The club are hosting their first Open Track and Field meeting on Sunday April 8 at the Stadium 2000, the event sponsored by Sedgefield company Linpac Filmco.
