YOUNGSTERS have cut the first turf of a play area they helped to design.
The derelict Coundon Grange Recreation area is to be revitalised with a new ball court and landscaping improvements.
The first turf was cut by children from Dene Valley Drop-In Club on Saturday, who with local adults suggested ideas for the area at workshops and activity sessions.
The plans are part of a project by Dene Valley Community Partnership and Groundwork West Durham to regenerate the area.
The ball court should be finished by the end of this month.
Debbie Ingolsby, of Groundwork West Durham, said: "It will be quite an asset for the area, not just for Coundon Grange but for all the villages. It has taken quite a while to get to this stage with funding."
