WORK to build two extra classrooms at Hurworth Comprehensive School, near Darlington, is due to start later this week.
There are 630 pupils at the school and unlike the picture in the rest of the town, demand for places continues to grow.
Hurworth Comprehensive was originally built as a village school for 280 pupils, but because of its good reputation rolls have not stopped rising.
In a bid to solve the overcrowding, two classrooms are being added and an existing classroom is being converted into a science laboratory.
The cost of the scheme is £150,000, of which £80,000 has come from Darlington Borough Council and £70,000 from the Government.
Headteacher Eamonn Farrar said: "We get children bussed in from all over Darlington even though some of them have comprehensive schools on their doorstep."
The new classrooms are due to be open in September
