A YOUTH council has been making plans for a better future for people on a Darlington estate.
The Skerne Park Youth Council has been considering how to make the best use of the green area next to Hammond Drive and Lakeside. One idea was to develop the area into a recreation site.
The youth council has built the base of a scale model of the area to use in consultations about the project.
To help the process, members of the group, plus members of Darlington Borough Council's countryside team, Tees Forest, Community Enterprise Association and Single Regeneration Budget workers have been trained in a consultation tool called Planning For Real.
Now the 5ft square model has been given to Skerne Park Primary School for pupils to complete. It will then tour the estate to help generate ideas.
The final event will be at the school fair in summer, when Skerne Park and Lakeside residents will be invited to decide what features they would like to see on the countryside site.
Rachel Wood, Local Agenda 21 officer, said: "This is an excellent example of a true community project with local people deciding what they want in their area in a creative way."
