TV star Kevin Whately is one of the first celebrities to lend his support to an innovative regeneration scheme.

The Northumberland-born actor has made a "substantial investment'' in the Newcastle Employment Bond Scheme which aims to breathe new life into run-down parts of the city and create new job opportunities.

He said: "Whenever I return to Newcastle I am reminded what a truly fantastic city it is - full of passion and pride.

"Despite this, unemployment has crippled a percentage of its people and families for too long.

"I believe it is about time that everyone who can, makes an effort to reduce this blight on our otherwise great city.''
