EURO-STYLE recycling came to North Yorkshire yesterday, as residents were urged to get behind a new green initiative.
Hambleton District Council launched a £16,000 kerbside recycling scheme in Thirsk, in an effort to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill sites.
More than 1,000 residents of East Thirsk will pilot the project over the next year by sorting their waste paper and magazines, glass, cans and plastic bottles in specially-supplied containers, ready for fortnightly collection.
Collection rates will be monitored by the council, and if it is deemed to be successful, the scheme could be expanded further across the Hambleton district.
