YOUNG carers who look after sick or elderly relatives are being given the chance to enjoy themselves.
Youngsters across Durham and Derwentside will be treated to a "fun fest'' at Belle Vue Leisure Centre, in Consett, on Saturday.
They will get the chance to swim, play five-a-side soccer and table tennis, and enjoy a disco. Storytelling and face-painting sessions will also be laid on for younger carers.
The event has been organised by the children's charity Barnardo's and the Durham community organisation Disc.
While it gives young carers a break from their duty and the chance to have fun, there is a serious side.
A Barnardo's spokeswoman said the organisers hope the carers will form an on-going consultation group "which will constantly feed back on what the young carers feel they need by way of support and help.''
