THE establishment of a regional education forum has taken a major step forward following the appointment of Lord Sawyer of Darlington as its chairman.
The Regional Education Forum, a joint initiative between the North East Regional Assembly and One NorthEast, provides a platform to promote an inclusive regional approach to education and learning.
It has been set up to recognise and promote best practice, tackle under achievement, and celebrate excellence.
Lord Sawyer, who was general secretary of the Labour Party, takes up his role with immediate effect.
He said: "This is an exciting challenge. It is imperative that we work together and focus our educational resources in the North-East so that we provide the best possible opportunities for our young people."
One NorthEast chief executive Mike Collier said: "This appointment is about bringing together regional expertise in educational partnership to address problems and issues in learning and attainment."
