Ellen Taylor, 16, from Dalehouse Village near Staithes, is hoping to be accepted as part of a Hartlepool-based crew which is taking part in the Cutty Sark tall ships race around Scandinavia this summer.
Although Ellen has no experience of sailing she is looking forward to the challenge.
To take part in the event Ellen needs to raise £2,000, £900 of which she already has.
Ellen's next sponsored event will be a 22-mile swim at either Loftus or Whitby Swimming Pool. Anyone who would like to sponsor Ellen in her swim - or donate money to her fund - can call her on (01947) 840928.
