COWBOY contractors have been knocking on doors in North Yorkshire, swindling homeowners and businesses who have agreed to have tarmac laid on drives and entrances.
An 85-year-old woman was among the victims, paying a man who called at her Ripon home more than £100 after he persuaded her that work needed doing outside her house.
He never returned to do the job.
Meanwhile, a business in the city was quoted £50 for a small stretch of tarmac - and then billed £1,000.
The man who called on the pensioner had an Irish accent, was in his late 40s, had short, light hair, and was wearing green overalls and dirty white trainers.
It is believed the men are using a yellow, flat-backed lorry, and a small van.
Police have repeated warnings that homeowners and traders should stick to reputable dealers.
However, if they are tempted by tradesmen calling door-to-door, they are advised to obtain a quote in writing, including a telephone number where the company can be reached, and to compare the cost with another high street firm with a solid reputation.
