A DURHAM community association in danger of folding has been dealt another blow by an arson attack on its hall.
Newton Hall Community Association's centre in Carr House Drive was badly damaged, forcing the groups that it use it to seek alternatives.
Wednesday's annual meeting, at which the association's fate could be decided, has been switched to Finchale Primary School, Canterbury Road, because of the fire.
The association's chairman Peter Hodgeson, treasurer Frank Cure and secretary Valerie Pope are standing down after giving many years of service, but no one has come forward to take their places.
Unless a new committee is formed at the meeting the association could be wound up.
Mr Cure said: "The building is quite badly damaged and there is no gas, water or electricity on. I gather that the city council is prepared to repair if a new committee is formed on Wednesday night.
"We have been having more and more vandalism around the building.
"Some groups have relocated already. The senior citizens have gone to All Saints Church and the dog training class has relocated to Ushaw Moor but there are still groups that want to use the building."
He said there had been some interest in committee posts.
Among those using the centre are a play group, dance class, karate club, luncheon club and mother and toddler group.
Anyone wanting to put their names forward for the committee can do so at the meeting, which starts at 7.30pm, or call Mr Cure on 0191-386 7306 or Mrs Pope on 0191-386 2866.
