CARERS have been given a new lifeline with the opening of a resource centre.
The Stockton Carers' Resource Centre will provide a one-stop shop for carers across the town, who will be able to receive advice and support.
There will be two paid staff - a manager and administrative assistant - and six volunteers.
Andy McMann, the manager, said: "It is a centre run by carers for carers, which will provide them with support and somewhere to turn to.
"It points them in the right direction of organisations that can help them and gives them one-to-one support.
"Carers responsible for looking after someone often do not have time to go to places like the Benefits Agency, and we are here to help."
The building in Bishopton Lane, Stockton, was opened by Dari Taylor, MP for Stockton South, and the Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Pete Andrews.
Ms Taylor said: "I am delighted that a resource centre is being provided in Stockton for carers. So often this group of people can be forgotten.
"Those who are cared for receive most of the support, but those who give up their free time, and often their jobs, to care for loved ones can be taken for granted or forgotten.
"Carers are the unsung heroes of today.
"The centre will be a lifeline to many carers in the town."
