VOTERS at a forthcoming by-election are being urged to apply for a postal vote because of the foot-and-mouth crisis.
Because of legislation surrounding electoral matters, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has had to fix the date of the Loftus by-election for Thursday, May 3.
The vacancy was declared in the east Cleveland ward due to the resignation of Councillor William Rye.
Yesterday, Colin Moore, chief executive and returning officer for the council, said: "We have no alternative but to hold the by-election within 35 days of receiving two or more requests, which is all part of the democratic process.
"There is absolutely no reason at all why people should not place their vote by post, and I would urge them to do so."
Applications for a postal vote must be received by 5pm on Wednesday, April 25, and should be made to: The Returning Officer, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, The Town Hall, Fabian Road, South Bank, TS6 9AR.
