DESCENDANTS of the last family to run a County Durham bus company returned to the region yesterday for the launch of an exhibition on the firm's history.

David Hillerby, a former driver for Wilkinson's Motor Services, in Sedgefield, set up the two-week exhibition on his former employers at Sedgefield Library.

The company operated from 1919 to 1967.

Mr Hillerby, who drove for Wilkinson's in the Fifties and Sixties, was approached by the Coach Preservation Society three weeks ago as part of its plans to write a history of the firm.

Wilkinson's came to an end after director Gordon Thompson died in 1966, leaving his wife, Evelyn, to run the business. The company was bought by United a year later.

Mr and Mrs Thompson's sons, Geoff and Alan, and daughter, Pat, attended the exhibition launch. Among the exhibits is a miniature bus in Wilkinson's livery, donated by Preston Park Museum, which plans to put it on permanent display after the display in Sedgefield is dismantled.

Anyone with memorabilia or photographs to lend to the display can contact Mr Hillerby on (01740) 621343.
