THE end of an era could be in sight for one of the Teesside chemical industry's historically-important buildings.
The grade two-listed Wilton Castle and stables, near Redcar, were used by chemical firms for corporate training and entertainment until 1999, when the castle was put up for sale.
Now, plans to convert the castle into 21 apartments, and convert the leisure club and stables into 14 houses and six apartments go before Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council tomorrow.
The application by Wimpey Homes also includes plans for eight new houses, plus parking for 90 vehicles.
In a report to the council's planning committee, Dr Joan Rees, director of economy and environment, said there were concerns that the scheme was contrary to policy for new housing developments in listed buildings.
But she said the housing development was probably the most economically viable option for the castle.
Dr Rees' report is recommending the committee to approve the scheme
