ONE of a community's best known couples have celebrated their diamond wedding in their home of 60 years.
John and Ethel Hall first moved into their house at Castleside, near Consett, after they were married in 1941.
Their home was packed out with well-wishers, during an open house day to celebrate.
John Hall, 88 and Ethel Hall, 89, are both members of Castleside over-60s Club, and Mr Hall is remembered as a steelworks union official, parish councillor and founder member of Consett photographic society.
Among their guests of honour on their big day was their best man, Mr Hall's brother, Robert, and two bridesmaids, the bride's sisters Doris and Marjorie.
Mrs Hall looked back on the first 60 years of her marriage.
She said: "We always got on well and had our own interests and we've been happy. We have a lot of friends and we had a wonderful day."
Mr Hall was born in Blackhill and spent his early working life working as a horseman for Dryden Ward's forestry business before becoming a smelter at Consett Iron Company.
Mrs Hall was born at Allendale Cottages, near Medomsley, and worked in a shop and doctor's surgery before she married.
They have a son, Alan, and two grandchildren, Claire and Gillian.
