A NEW generation of environmentally friendly, easy access buses is being rolled into service in the region.
Bus operator, Go North-East, unveiled the new single-deck Scania Solar bus to travellers at the MetroCentre, in Gateshead, and is the first company in the country to use the vehicles.
The 11 buses are designed with a low floor for easy access, operate on low sulphur fuel and have distinctive, futuristic styling.
They cost £1.3m and are the latest in an ongoing investment programme in bus services in the Gateshead area.
The first of the buses is operating on the X66 Supershuttle service between Gateshead town centre and the Metro Centre and the other ten will come into service during the next month.
Martin Harris, commercial director of Go North East, said: "It is hoped that such modern and highly visible buses will help promote greater use of public transport and encourage more motorists to abandon their cars."
