AN orchid house which once took centre stage in an historic garden is close to being restored to its former glory in a £130,000 project.
And organisers of the Helmsley Walled Garden project are now offering people a chance to play in a part in the scheme. An "adopt-a-brick" scheme has been launched, with residents and visitors to the area paying £5 to have their name put to a piece of the building.
The restored orchid house, largely funded by a grant from environmental charity Wren, with the remainder from Ryedale District Council, will take the same form as the original, with several shelves up the walls instead of a single bench.
Work on the project started last October and is expected to finish at the end of April.
Anyone interested in joining the adopt-a-brick scheme can telephone (01439) 771427.
