pensioners are being urged to find out whether they qualify for housing benefit following changes in the budget.
Changes to the rules being introduced in April mean that many people will qualify for the benefit who did not before.
A Durham City Council spokesman said: "Anyone over 60 is now allowed to have £6,000 in savings before it is taken into account, and they are also allowed to have a bigger weekly income.
"There is no need for people in Durham City district who already get housing benefit to apply because increases will already have been calculated.
"If you think you might qualify for benefit, don't delay. The sooner you make your claim, the sooner it can be dealt with.
"Claims cannot be backdated. These changes also apply to council tax benefit."
