DURING the past ten years children in the Tees Valley have received a £5.5m boost to their education thanks to grants from Tees Valley Training and Enterprise Council (Tec).
The money has been used to support a large number of diverse and innovative projects, including assisting schools achieve specialist college status and supporting the Education Action Zones to raise achievement in schools through activities, such as homework clubs, mentoring, and increased information technology opportunities.
Other projects the Tec has supported include development of The Willie Maddren Centre, an education classroom at Middlesbrough's Cellnet Riverside Stadium.
The centre, which was set up three years ago, benefits 4,500 primary and secondary school children each year, from more than 100 schools.
Roy Brown, director of lifelong learning for Tees Valley Tec said: "The necessity of funding from additional sources has become increasingly important in all aspects of school life.
"As the Tec's term of office has come to an end, we are delighted to be leaving behind a number of legacies that will continue to benefit the area's young people."
