MORE than 60 handmade quilts have gone on display as part of an annual exhibition celebrating the traditional craft.
The fourth Pins and Needles exhibition will run at Newcastle's Telewest Arena until tomorrow, and includes quilts made by individuals and groups from across the North East.
Yvonne Straughan, event organiser, said: "The idea behind the exhibition was that it would give as many people as possible the chance to share their work, whatever their ability. The quilts are, however, of a very high standard, displaying some of the latest design and development techniques, and demonstrate the sheer quality of patchwork and quilting being undertaking by quilters from all walks of life.
"This just goes to show that this traditional craft continues to thrive within the region."
One of the exhibitors is Pat Shaw, originally from Yorkshire but who has lived in Germany for 29 years.
She heard about the Pins and Needles exhibition while on holiday in the Tyne Valley and decided to take part.
The quilts form only a small part of the exhibition, which has attracted more than 80 specialist trade stands and expects more than 10,000 visitors during its three-day run.
Stands include lace making, quilting, bead work, cross stitch, glass painting and stencilling.
The exhibition is open today from 10am to 5pm and tomorrow from 10am to 4pm. Tickets (£4.75) are available on the door.
