A FORMER vet who works in a supermarket has been called back to the field to help with the foot-and-mouth crisis.
David Belford, 51, sold his veterinary practice in Appleby, Cumbria in 1999 and moved to Crossgate Moor, Durham, because his wife had secured a place on a theology course.
He took a part-time job at the meat counter in Sainsbury's at the Arnison Centre, Durham, just to keep busy.
He said: "I'm really enjoying my job, but I know that Maff has been asking for vets to come forward and help because they're desperately short of people.
Sainsbury's has told Mr Belford that his job at the store will be kept open.
He hopes to begin this week and expects to be working in the Newcastle area.
He said: "I did want to go back to Cumbria but apparently they have plenty of people there because that's where the outbreak is worst.
