STAFF at the McDonald's restaurant in Newton Aycliffe swapped sandwiches for sponges to take part in a sponsored car wash.
The restaurant has been supporting the Durham Agency Against Crime's Wise Drive for Life appeal, set up by police to encourage youngsters to drive safely.
A number of fundraising events have already taken place, including a raffle and a Treasure Island game.
On Saturday, a number of staff came in on their day off to help wash customers' cars, charging £2 a time.
Assistant manager Amanda Cargill said: "People have been really good and supported us. We've also had people from around the area giving prizes for our raffle."
The Wise Drive for Life appeal is being co-ordinated through schools and is aimed at prospective new drivers.
Young people aged 17 to 25 are said to be involved in 40 per cent of all accidents
