THERE is to be more research into the feasibility of farmers' markets in Richmond, despite some unease over the impact on shops in the town centre.

The town council has always had the interests of shops on the Market Place in mind when the prospect of new stalls has been debated.

However, members have agreed to look at two options for the future: either additional stalls on the third Saturday of each month, or a monthly farmers' market on a Sunday.

Both would be held on the Market Place as town councillors have already agreed car parking at Nuns Close is at a premium at weekends, when local shoppers mix with day-trippers visiting the town.

Dan Weston, of the Northern Dales Red Meat Initiative, told town council members: "This method of marketing will bring a much-needed, sustainable, local link to consumers and will also add value to Richmond and its economy.''

Opinions still differ on the way forward, although chairwoman of the markets and allotments committee, Jane Metcalfe, said: "The continuity of farmers' markets is essential. I would be delighted to welcome the farmers to the town and bring back trading to Richmond, which would make us a true market town.''
