Gateshead Spring Flower Show opens its doors to the public today and hopes to attract record numbers of visitors over the weekend.
The show is held annually at the Central Nursery, Lobley Hill, and is one of the country's leading shows.
It draws visitors from throughout the North-East and further afield and about 20,000 people are expected to attend over the two days.
One of the highlights will be a display of a species of prehistoric fern that has remained unchanged for 350 million years.
Individual specimens are also ancient in their own right - the oldest plant is thought to be about 200 years old.
In addition, there will be floral displays, a craft fair, stalls selling everything for the garden and plenty of activities for youngsters.
Representatives from two of the country's leading gardening magazines, Garden News and Garden Answers, will host a series of talks and demonstrations by horticulturists throughout the weekend.
Visitors can also enjoy cream teas supplied by Pumphrey's, the Tyneside tea and coffee distributor.
Gateshead Spring Flower Show will be open from 10am to 5pm today and tomorrow.
There is free parking for 2,000 cars, and a free park and ride service will operate from Gateshead Civic Centre.
Tickets cost £5.50 for adults and £4 for children aged five to 16 and senior citizens. Advance credit card bookings can be made by calling 0191-478 5555.
