PROPOSALS have been submitted for a leisure complex near the village of Scorton.

The suggestion that more could be made of the old quarry workings south of the village is not a new one - a meeting only last month discussed the possibilities of an hotel, golf course and water sports centre in the area.

However, a formal planning application has now been submitted to Richmondshire District Council.

The blueprints outline the redevelopment of Ellerton North Farm to include a shop, restaurant and an 18-bedroom accommodation block.

A formal report on the project will be compiled and officers' recommendations will be included in a document which will be presented to the district council's planning committee within the next few months.

The signs are already good, with the authority voting this week to object to an alternative use of land in the same area.

Yorwaste wants permission for a tip and recycling plant at the nearby Tancred Quarry and, as it involves landfill and waste disposal, North Yorkshire County Council has the final say on the application.

County Hall has already earmarked the use in its Waste Disposal Plan.

However, with the Environment Agency as well as Richmondshire District Council on their side, people with homes in the area are hoping the authority will think again.

Neighbours claim a tip and waste recycling scheme will lead to more disturbance, litter and pollution -- a view also supported by both Brompton-on-Swale and Scorton Parish Councils.
