FEM-ALE: Girls who are sick of stocking up on vodka or wine at the supermarket could soon be in for a treat. Tesco is targeting the fairer sex with a new drink which is described as subtle, full of flavour and with a great bouquet. But it's not champagne or a cocktail - it's beer.
The supermarket has employed the country's first all-female beer-tasting panel, which is travelling the country to find beers that suit more feminine tastebuds. The women's beers will be sold in funky packaging, complete with nutritional information which is said to be important to girls, even when they're drinking. The number of female beer drinkers has doubled in the past five years and they now spend around £70m a year, so Tesco seems to be onto a good thing.
KNUCKLE-RAP: As if it wasn't bad enough that Ann Robinson is releasing a single, she also plans to back it up with a raunchy new image. The quizmaster with the acid tongue is recording a rap single which will feature her criticising contestants on the Weakest Link. The 57-year-old TV presenter will be heard saying: "You are the weakest link, goodbye" over a dance track. It follows the huge success in the UK's night-clubs of bootleg tunes featuring her put-downs. But it seems the irony of British clubbers has passed Anne by and she really thinks she can become a disco diva. She says she has a bought a leather outfit to wear for her debut on Top of the Pops and the single isn't even in the shops yet.
BAD RULES: No-one wants to laugh at someone else's misfortune but it was hard to suppress a wry smile when it was revealed that author Ellen Fein is heading for the divorce courts. Fein was the co-author of The Rules, a book which claimed to reveal the guidelines to the perfect dates and marriage. With stupid ideas such as not spending more than ten minutes on a phone call and not saying 'yes' to a weekend date if you had seen your man mid-week, the book was full of unnecessary advice. It encouraged women to show off their bodies, not to be funny and not to talk about deep issues with their men. But it seems the rule book didn't work for its inventor. She's splitting from her husband of 16 years because he ran off with another woman... who presumably had her own mind and wasn't scared to express an opinion. Publishers have redrawn the cover of Fein's new book Rules III which claimed to reveal the "time-tested secrets for making a marriage work".
GROW UP: Whatever happened to those nice, clean-cut Boyzone lads, the ones you could have happily taken home to meet your mum? Although the band hasn't officially split up, they haven't recorded anything for months and are now starting to fall out. Mikey Graham says he and singer Ronan Keating are no longer in contact after the band was put on ice. And Shane Lynch has allegedly criticised Ronan for not talking to ordinary people any more and acting above his station. This split shows just what happens to manufactured bands when they get too big for their boots and go their separate ways. Unlike those who have come together as friends, created bands have nothing to keep them together when the music stops. As former role models for a generation, this petty squabbling and name-calling is pathetic. It's time the boys turned into men and congratulated Ronan on his solo success, rather than snidely making bitter comments behind his back.
