FARMERS are angry at proposals to bury hundreds of slaughtered animals near healthy livestock.
It is claimed that carcasses from Ashes Farm, at Ruswarp, near Whitby, North Yorkshire, are being transported for burial at Richmond, North Yorkshire, an area without foot-and-mouth.
Gill and Tom Farrow, who farm at Waitworth Bank, near Richmond, joined neighbours to speak to Army and Ministry of Agriculture officials yesterday about the suitability of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) site.
Mrs Farrow, 51, said: "We only found out by chance that they were planning to use the site to burn and bury cattle, which has angered us even more.
"We've been farming here for more than three generations and, although it is MoD-owned land, we rent it and farm on it, and it would have been nice to have been consulted.
"Instead, we face the risk of infection of our 600 sheep and 80 cattle, which would mean the end of our livelihood."
