A COUNCILLOR has teamed up with a Russian charity to provide help for victims of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor disaster.
Darlington borough councillor Gerald Lee, who represents the Heighington ward, is helping to promote the Leleka charity's clean air project.
It was set up to help Ukrainian youngsters suffering the legacy of the Chernobyl disaster 15 years ago.
Many youngsters have been born with defects because of the radioactive fallout from the plant.
The aim is to provide children with a foreign holiday for up to three weeks so they can recuperate and meet new friends.
Councillor Lee said: "Sadly the legacy of Chernobyl is still such that doctors advise they need to be away for two to three weeks a year for recuperative holidays."
Anyone who would like to help can contact Coun Lee on (01325) 314622 or (07774) 260043.
