THE growing problem of flytipping is about to face a crackdown.
Officials at Easington District Council are concerned that residents are dumping disused household appliances and garden waste on roadsides, paths and fields instead of taking the rubbish to a public tip.
They say that businesses are also unloading waste, including tyres and building rubble, instead of paying to dump it at a licensed tip.
Council officers and colleagues from the Environment Agency have joined forces to patrol problem areas across east Durham.
The council is warning that it will prosecute offenders, who face a maximum fine of £20,000 if they are convicted.
Councillor Arthur Nevens, said: "We are concerned about the increasing problems being caused by flytipping in this area. Not only is it unsightly, but there are also potential health problems and it can harbour rats."
Anyone who witnesses flytipping is urged to call the Envirocall Unit, on 0191-527 0501.
