THE funeral takes place today of former miner John Bruce.
The 86-year-old, of Lake View, Wingate, who died on April 8, was a familiar figure in the mining community and village where he had lived all his life.
His son, Gordon, said: "He was a remarkable man. He was a coal miner, but he also won essay competitions and went to Oxford University for a year.
"He was also a good speaker and spoke on forces broadcasts during the war."
During his career as a miner, Mr Bruce worked in Wingate, Sherburn and Shotton Collieries.
At 21, he became the youngest lodge secretary in County Durham, and later became a pit deputy.
He was awarded the British Empire Medal for his services to industry.
A Labour Party member all his life, he served on Wingate Parish Council for many years.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral, which will take place at Durham Crematorium, at 9.30am.
