AN Easter gift of £40 was handed over yesterday - from one of the world's poorest nations to flood victims in one of the world's richest.

The people of Mozambique, which is still recovering from a disastrous floods which left 200,000 homeless, were moved by last November's flooding in North Yorkshire.

The gift from their National Assembly was presented to the Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, by Vale of York MP Anne McIntosh.

Dr Hope said the gift was humbling for all involved because of the devastation which Mozambique had faced, and from which it was still suffering.

"The generosity of this gesture is absolutely extraordinary," he said.

"I think this is a symbol of all that is good about humanity which sends out an extremely strong Easter message."

Miss McIntosh expressed her "immense gratitude" to the people of Mozambique for the money.

"For them this is a huge amount."

Between 650,000 and a million people are thought to have been affected when the poverty-stricken country was deluged by water.

The country still faces hardship, particularly after a tropical storm in January which killed more than 40 people.
