A CHARITABLE foundation has announced £1m aid for communities hit by foot-and-mouth disease.
Newcastle's Northern Rock Foundation has allocated this year's Big Project Fund to those affected by the outbreak across the region.
Fiona Ellis, foundation director, said: "The trustees are very aware that the fragile rural economy is suffering in so may ways during the crisis.
"As well as sympathising deeply with the farmers, our aim is far wider and seeks to help whole rural communities affected, including village halls and rural services."
The first donation of £180,000 is to be made to Debt Advice Within Northumberland to pay for workers to assist people manage financial difficulties.
Applications should be sent to The Northern Rock Foundation, Foot-and-Mouth Disease, 21 Lansdowne Terrace, Gosforth, Newcastle, NE3 1HP.
l The Farmers' Fund launched by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society is gathering pace. A total of £69,127 has been raised, made up from a £50,000 donation given by the society and the balance from the public and organisations.
