THE future of Darlington's Shopmobility scheme has been made more secure through a formal contract with the local authority.
The loan of electric scooters and wheelchairs , which is free to registered users, is provided through Darlington association on disability.
This year it was given £29,000 to keep the service going and £15,000 towards the cost of its premises.
Mr John Buxton, director of development and environment, told Tuesday's cabinet meeting: "This formal agreement is long overdue. Shopmobility has consistently offered a high quality service since it first started. "
The contract will set out what the council wants for its residents and in return Shopmobility will be able to plan ahead, backed by the security of three years of funding.
Coun Nick Wallis cabinet member for highways and transport, agreed: "It provides a first-class, quality of life service."
A steering group will be set up to monitor its performance - a partnership between the council, the association, Shopmobility and its users.
