YOUNGSTERS at St John's CE primary school in Darlington have been honoured for being "good citizens".
Health Secretary and Darlington MP Mr Alan Milburn visited the school last Friday to present the awards during morning assembly.
Hard-working children from each year group were recognised either for being active good citizens within the school community or for their commitment to homework.
Created last year, the awards aim to reinforce the school's code of conduct and develop children's confidence and sense of responsibility.
Last month, the head teacher and staff received a school improvement award from the Minister of School Standards, Mrs Estelle Morris, after substantially improving results for the 1999-2000.
Head teacher Miss Christine Large said: "It is very important that these children get the recognition they deserve.
"As an improving school we do try to recognise not only academic goals but also personal and moral achievements.
"Our children realise that they have an important part to play in our society and that they can make a difference."
