YOUNGSTERS from schools in Peterlee joined forces to brighten up the town.
Pupils from St Bede's Catholic Comprehensive, Shotton Hall, and Dene Community School took part in the World Challenge Programme funded by Peterlee Education Action Zone.
They planted large flower borders and turfed areas on bare land in a local park for their community project.
The programme's next phase is a mountain climbing challenge, in Scotland, where they will face more hard work in hiking, rock climbing and abseiling.
Bridget Carins, teacher at St Bede's, said: "Hopefully, when the flowers bloom, the pupils should be in France, completing a five-day expedition - the final part of the challenge."
The youngsters have begun washing cars to raise money for the trip.
