AT the Enron-sponsored Redcar Half Marathon, which was the last counter in the annual club championship series, there was a large turn out of club members with 14 completing the course, several recording personal best times for the distance despite the blustery conditions.
Andy Henderson, more used to the fells, was the first Quaker home, finishing in 79th position with a time of 1:22:47. He was followed in by Dave Tarren in 151st place with 1:28:04, Steve Milne was 158th with 1:28:41, Dawn Richardson reduced the club's senior ladies record time by four minutes to finish in a personal best time of 1:30:32 for 182nd position. Keith Shevels also recorded a personal best for his age group in 197th place with 1:31:38. Dave McLachlan ran a personal best time of 1:32:46 for 208th place as did Dave Mason in 255th position with 1:35:06 and Mike Scott in 366th position with 1:41:36. Adrian Martin recorded 1:47:48 for 475th position. Emma Taylor was 568th in 1:54:13, Mike Horan ran a new club over 65 record time of 1:58:24 for 612th place. Dave England was 647th in 2:03:03 and Jenny Haworth finished in 2:13:23 for 696th place.
Due to foot-and-mouth outbreak, the scheduled final race in the Mandale Reproductions - Northern Runner Winter Series, the 'Gisborough Moors Fell Race' had to be postponed, this was replaced by the 'Redcar and Saltburn Sea Chanty' a 12-mile beach race.
Ten members of the club competed at the beach races, taking second and third places in the men's race, second place in the ladies race and first place in the team event.
Barry Stephenson, on an Easter break from Loughborough University, ran an excellent race to finish second on the demanding 12-mile course in a time of 1:04:45, with clubmate Alasdair Tatham in third position with a time of 1:07:03, Wayne Bramley recorded 1:14:46 for 12th place and Andy Henderson ran 1:17:26 for 17th spot, good enough to beat host club, Mandale Harriers into second place in the team event.
Keith Richardson recorded 1:21:05 for 25th place. Harry Manuel was 1:23:57 to finish 29th. Dave Giblin ran 1:25:56 to finish 32nd. Keith Shevels was 34th in 1:26:37 followed in by older brother Keven just two places behind with 1:27:04. Kendra White finished second lady on the day with a time of 1:28:20 for 40th place overall.
Steve Carter was the only representative of the club to compete in the shorter six-mile race, finishing in a time of 47:43 for 21st position. In the winter series final placings, the Quakers A team finished fifth overall with the Quakers B team in joint 10th place and the club's women's team finished in second place. Individual performance's left Joe Hutchinson in 13th position, Scott Archbold finished 15th and Kev Shevels was 20th. In the Over-40 veterans men category, Harry Manuel finished in 13th position and Keith Richardson was 18th. Kendra White finished runner up in the ladies category with Sally Rouse in sixth.
One of the club's promising youngsters, discus thrower Gemma Bramley, was selected to represent the North-East in a match at Shildon, but unfortunately has had to pull out due to a back injury.
l With the current foot-and-mouth outbreak, all of the Quaker organised events are postponed until further notice. It is hoped that alternative dates can be found for these events at a later stage.
