A DEPRIVED part of Redcar could be in line for extra cash as part of a new national government regeneration scheme.

The Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions has identified 83 eligible areas across the country which could become a Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder. The government department has asked Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council to submit one area as a potential candidate for the scheme.

Coun David Walsh, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, explained the scheme puts extra cash into deprived areas as a way of developing neighbourhood management schemes, which allows community groups to take responsibility over the regeneration of their areas.

The council suggested both the Courts and Top Lakes estates in Kirkleatham and the Dormanstown West ward as possibilities for the scheme.

The scheme covers areas affected by poor physical environment, crime, ill-health, joblessness and educational under achievement and both areas meet this criteria.

Both areas benefit from having active community forums to address local issues, and could play a part if the scheme gets the green light. The council has submitted Kirkleatham as its nomination for the scheme and will now carry out work with interested parties to prepare a bid for the scheme.

And councillors are also hoping to approve work for Dormanstown with a Neighbourhood Renewal Scheme and the deployment of community wardens into Dormanstown.
