Two unbelievable own goals handed beleagured Boro a massive boost in their bid to beat the drop.
Two own goals from Brazilian team-mates Edu and Silvinho and a superb effort from Hamilton Ricard set Boro on their way to an historic victory over their illustrious hosts.
Dean Gordon knocked a seemingly innocuous ball into the Arsenal area finding Dean Windass whose resulting shot looked to be heading towards the corner flag until it struck the unfortunate Edu, deflecting beyond David Seaman.
Boro's second was equally farcical as Dean Gordon's low cross missed everyone but Silvinho, who under no pressure somehow managed to steer the ball past the despairing Seaman.
The writing was on the wall for the Gunners when Colombian hitman Hamilton Ricard struck in the second half.
After an exchange off passes with Dean Windass, Ricard latched on to Alen Boksic's back heel to send Boro's travelling contingent into raptures with a cool finish.
