A hotel which has counted Boy George and Alan Shearer among its guests has been put up for sale at more than £2.5m.

The award-winning Crab Manor Hotel, at Asenby, near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, has been offered on the open market by Leeds selling agents Knight Frank.

The hotel is a former Georgian hunting lodge, which owners David and Jackie Bernard modelled on international hotels.

Also up for sale is the Crab and Lobster restaurant, which is set within the same grounds and is listed as the AA's best seafood pub.

The hotel and restaurant have been regular haunts of the rich and famous in the past, with guests including members of Boyzone, Julian Lloyd-Webber, Boy George, Alan Shearer, Ian Botham, Chris Rea, Janet Street-Porter and Leeds United manager David O'Leary.

It was opened 11 years ago and remains one of only a handful of thatched pubs in Yorkshire.

Mr Bernard said: "Ten years ago we set out to create everyone's favourite place - a place where people felt at home no matter what their age. We believe we've gone a long way to achieving this."

Simon Stevens, of Knight Frank, said: "This is a rare and wonderful opportunity to purchase one of the UK's best independent hotel and restaurant operations.

"It is a fine example of how to build a successful hotel business on the back of a highly acclaimed restaurant, and we anticipate an early sale."
