WILLIAM Hague must think that someone, or something up there, doesn't like him.

First he's branded a Mekon by his own party chairman on Friday, then, to continue the "little green man" theme, the Labour Party will now portray the Tory Leader as part of an alien crew of a spaceship.

Tim Collins, who leads the Conservatives' election campaign, last week joked that Mr Hague looked like the Mekon, Dan Dare's arch-enemy in the Eagle comic popular in the Fifties and Sixties.

The embarrassing own goal, uttered before a 300-strong live audience for Radio 4's Any Questions, came when a fellow panelist named the evil Mekon as his personal childhood hero.

At this, Mr Collins remarked: "Who is the leader of my party at the moment, actually?"

Ironically, considering his well-publicised attack on "illegal aliens", it was then revealed the Richmond MP will soon feature as an extra-terrestrial in a Labour election advert, based on Independence Day, the popular sci-fi blockbuster.

The cheeky ad will see a huge flying saucer, piloted by Mr Hague and Michael Portillo, casting an ominous shadow over St Paul's Cathedral and the Bank of England.

As voters are reminded of the Tory's patchy economic policies of the past, the broadcast will end with the slogan: "Don't go back."

A senior party spokesman, commenting on the Mekon gag, said: "I don't think there is an official party line on this."
