CREEPY-CRAWLIES and all things slimy and scaly fascinated visitors to an unusual exhibition yesterday.

The annual creepy-crawly fair at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre, in County Durham, included displays of spiders, snakes, lizards and stick insects.

Event organiser James Houlihan said: "It is run by local breeders, mainly from the Durham area, and this gives them an opportunity to sell them so that people are not taking them from the wild.

"About 90 per cent of the people who attend are adults who might have a snake or spider and want advice or information."

Some of the exhibits were available for people to handle and have their photograph taken with.

Definitely not in that category was a 22ft Burmese Python, one of the main attractions in a rare display of giant snakes.

However, the most popular creatures were the stick insects, many of which were on sale.
