MORE than 300 unemployed people on Wearside could be on the road to jobs after the launch of an automotive and manufacturing industry training drive.

The Automotive Sector Strategic Alliance (Assa) has secured a contract with the employment service to equip out- of-work adults with the skills needed by the local car industry and other high volume manufacturers.

The programme will deliver training in engineering and manufacturing disciplines for people seeking careers ranging from auto-electrics to production line operations.

The Assa course will give re-training for those who are looking for a route into firms like Nissan and its suppliers.

Training controller Graeme Bell said: "This two to-13-week course is tailored to give unemployed adults the confidence, skills and qualifications to get a foot in the door to some of the region's most prosperous companies.

"The course is delivered by Assa specialists who have a vast experience of the high volume manufacturing and automotive sectors so the training is relevant and realistic."

The training facility involves the recreation of a real manufacturing shop floor.

Assa has already recruited a new member of staff responsible for finding jobs for the 300 trainees who will be joining the programme each year.

It plans to employ a further four more staff to coordinate the work-based learning.

A spokesman from the Employment Service, said: "We awarded Assa this contract because of its proven track record in getting people into jobs.

"By providing a simulated production facility and expert knowledge of the manufacturing and car industry, we are confident that Assa will deliver the right mix of skills to get results."
