BATTLE re-enactors travelled centuries back in time yesterday to recreate ferocious clashes between Saxon warriors and Norman invaders. The turbulent years following the conquest of 1066 were played out at the 900-year-old Richmond Castle - Yorkshire's oldest fortress.
Battle scenes showed the Saxons put up a spirited defence against invading forces in 1069, only to pay the price when King William's troops went on a murderous spree to subdue northern England.
As well as the fierce battle action, there was also a living history encampment where military and domestic scenes showed warriors preparing to fight and craftspeople at work.
