COUNCIL officers have appealed to farmers to ensure their animals are kept secure.
Following reports of stray animals being allowed to wander, North Yorkshire County Council has said that animals which escape and are not claimed will be destroyed.
Animals which are claimed will be returned and logged with Maff, and the owners could face prosecution.
Jeremy Walker, council chief executive, said: "It is vital all measures to prevent the spread of the disease are put in place and adhered to by everyone.
"Straying animals pose a serious threat to the containment of the disease, and owners of animals must make sure this does not happen."
