In Wednesday's League Challenge Cup Final, played at Chester Moor Ground, Washington Westwood beat Belford House 2-0.
Westwood took the lead in the 37th minute when a cross from the left was punched out by the keeper on to the head of Jason Fox, who scored with a perfect controlled header over all the players and the keeper. The second goal came ten minutes from time with a neat move down the middle. Michael Ford won the ball midway in Belford's half, passed to Malcolm Nugent who then slipped it to Neil Helens, who went on to beat Belford's keeper with ease. Durham Victoria Bridge went down 4-1 at home to Birtley Town Reserves who held their own up to 35 minutes in the first-half when the score was 1-1 until Birtley scored again just before half-time. Birtley played the only decent football for the rest of the match, giving Victoria Bridge a lesson. Scorers for Birtley were John Curry (2), David Southern and Craig Marron. Paul Tindale scored for Victoria Bridge. Washington Westwood were rampant in their push for the championship when they beat Chesters 6-0. Michael Ford was first to score, followed by Paul Diamond (2), making the half-time score 3-0. After the break Diamond completed a hat-trick. George Marley, back after injury, added a fifth with a cracking 25-yard volley and Chris Hannah completed the scoring. Ebchester came close to adding to their one point when they went down 3-2 at Seaham Mallard who led 1-0 at half-time with a goal from Darren Slee. In the 63rd and 68th minutes Anthony Laidler scored two penalties putting them 3-0 in front. Andrew Pearson scored from the spot for Ebchester in the 75th minute and two minutes later Neil Burdon chipped the ball over the keeper for Ebchester. Seaham The Duke are still top following a 3-1 home win over Whitehill. The Duke led 1-0 at the interval with a goal from Colin Wright who scored another two after the break and it could have been even better but. John Pinder missed a penalty. John Bowman got a consolation goal for Whitehill. Belford House went down 2-0 at home to Herrington CW. Westwood continued in their scoring mood with a 5-3 win over Seaham Mallard on Monday with goals from Paul Diamond (2), Malcolm Nugent, Jason Fox and Dean Hellens with Anthony Laidler and Barry Coulgle replying for Mallard.

The League Cup semi-finals were both resolved and both had shock results. First Division leaders Washington entertained second division Sunderland Saints. Ian Stephen gave Saints a first half lead. Washington sought to make it a league cup double but it was Saints who took a step nearer to achieving that when Roker scored to secure a 2-0 win. In the other tie Stockton, second in Division One, entertained Easington who hold the same position in Division Two and are the cup holders so naturally did not want to relinquish their title without a fight. It took until the 44th minute for the deadlock to be broken and it was Dave Cuthbert who got the goal for Easington. In the second half Neil Robinson made it 2-0 with a crashing volley before Liam Denny with his 13th of the season pulled Stockton back into the game. But it was Easington who sealed their final place in the final minute, with a goal by Brad Howe to complete a 3-1 win. In the Wanless McConnell Shield Group A Durham Fire Brigade are in pole position to reach the final after their 3-0 win over Lanbaurgh. Steve Holcroft (2) and Ian Bell got the goals. The teams meet in the reverse fixture this week and Langbaurgh have to win to pass Durham Fire Brigade and reach the final. In the only league game Frankland travelled to Darlington and won 5-0. Ian Gibson scored four goals while club secretary Mick Hammond made a rare appearance and scored his first goal for the club.
