BUSINESS is booming at the Innovation Centre at Kirkleatham Business Park near Redcar.

There are 17 firms employing 99 people and hopes are high that occupancy levels will be approaching 100 per cent when the £2.4m centre celebrates its first anniversary in September.

The purpose-built business park is run by UK Steel Enterprise, a wholly-owned subsidary of Corus, and has been created by a funding package involving the company, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, regional development agency, One NorthEast, together with the European Regional Development Fund.

Along with offices and workshops, the centre has modern meeting rooms, a laser security system, private gym and sauna.

Businesses, from new starters to relocations, include software development, a soil-sampling laboratory and engineering.

Simon Hamilton, UK Steel Enterprise's regional executive for the North of England, based at the centre, said: "Already we've exceeded our original targets. We hope to be near capacity within the next few months.

"We're very keen to attract growing businesses to the Redcar and Cleveland area and provide them with an environment in which they can grow successfully."
